In a provincial Armenian school in the early twentieth century, pupils live under strict rules and supervision. The cook Karapet, nicknamed “Thermometer,” becomes a source of discontent among the boarders with his eccentricities and insistence on “law and order.” The attitude of Abelyan and his friends highlights adolescent rebellion, the authority of adults, and differing notions of justice. Years later, the narrator revisits his school memories and tries to understand the stern, lonely old man.
