In an unnamed town at the beginning of the twentieth century, during a great war, two young brothers, Maruk and Saruk, live with their widowed mother. Inspired by newspaper reports of courage at the front, both decide to enlist as volunteers. Their mother’s attempt to keep at least one son at home turns their resolve into a stubborn rivalry. The narrative explores the romantic image of war, youthful pride, and the conflict between the pursuit of heroism and duty to one’s family.
