The story unfolds in early twentieth-century America, from a farm in the Midwest to industrial Chicago. Through the fate of Gertrude, who moves from the countryside to the city, it portrays the vulnerability of a young woman living in poverty. Her hopes and care for her mother come up against exploitation and social indifference. The story explores questions of false charity, the hypocrisy of religious institutions, and human dignity.
