In the second half of the nineteenth century, Alexander spends his childhood in Shamakhi, a small town in the South Caucasus. His memories evoke the family home, stern and kindly teachers, schoolmates, a courageous grandmother, beloved trees, and domestic animals. Humorous and sorrowful incidents reveal a child’s sensitivity, his first lessons in friendship and compassion, and his growing rejection of cruelty, injustice, and ridicule directed at others.
