Tiflis, at the end of the nineteenth century. Young Heghine enters the princely Begmurian household, where the outward elegance of high society coexists with prejudice, financial dependence, and emotional distance. Her relations with her husband, Mikael, and his family bring into focus the tension between sincere affection and marriage shaped by calculation, as well as the pressures of class pride and social convention.
