In the late nineteenth century, in one of the Armenian rural towns, Kajenk, amid social change and the breakdown of the old way of life, tensions are building within an extended family over the division of property. In the relationship between Smbat and his brothers, the conflicts between individual interests, justice and fraternal solidarity emerge. New ideas and customs are changing people’s ties, while family discord becomes an expression of broader social disorder around them.
